On a chilly Christmas Eve in 2021, Raila Odinga, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, welcomed orphaned children to his home in Kisumu for a festive celebration.
As 'Baba Christmas,' Raila mingled with the children, sharing gifts and laughter as they sang and played games together.
Speaking to the press, Raila emphasized the importance of embodying the Christmas spirit, which is about giving and making the needy feel part of the community.
He stated, 'These are orphaned children and those who are disadvantaged, and we want to make them feel happy and part of the society. This is something that is charitable and it is done around the world.'
Later that evening, Raila would join Governor Anyang' Nyong'o and the County Government of Kisumu for a street Christmas party, where they would light the Christmas tree and share food with the needy.
However, residents attending the event would have to pay Ksh200 to access the venue, which would feature live band performances.
Three streets in Kisumu were closed for two days to accommodate the street Christmas bash.
