On July 8, 2019, a heated exchange erupted between Hon. Babu Owino, the Embakasi East Member of Parliament, and Miguna Miguna, a vocal critic still in exile after being deported by the government.
The controversy centers around a document confirming that Frida Muthoni, Babu Owino's wife, works for the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), which is illegal and unconstitutional. The revelation has sparked accusations of corruption against Babu Owino, with constituents citing nepotism as the reason for the alleged irregularity.
According to Chapter 183 of the Constitution, Clause 17, a public officer shall not practice nepotism or favoritism. However, Babu Owino has yet to defend himself against the accusations.
Miguna Miguna, known for his outspoken nature, fired back at Babu Owino, accusing him of peddling illicit drugs and killing university students during his time as the Student Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) leader.
The exchange between the two has sparked a heated debate about nepotism in Kenya, with many calling for an investigation into the practice. As the DCI and DPP focus on ending corruption, the issue of nepotism remains a pressing concern.
