On a thrilling Sunday afternoon at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Kenya, Kariobangi Sharks, a local football club, stunned English Premier League side Everton 4-3 in a post-match penalty shootout to win the SportPesa Cup.
The match, which was attended by a packed stadium of 50,000 fans, saw the two teams tied 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Sharks' Duke Abuya scored the first goal in the 28th minute, causing the stadium to erupt into wild cheers of joy and pride.
Abuya's goal was a result of his clever play, where he scooped the ball from the feet of Everton's left back Leighton Baines and tapped it into the empty net.
Sharks' coach William Muluya praised his team's achievement, saying, "It's an eye opener not just for me but for the players. They now know that they can achieve the impossible. And it is a very good motivation as we head into the new season."
The match was an action-packed affair, with both teams giving their all and entertaining the fans with their skills and determination.
Sharks' players, including Sven Yidah, Brian Bwire, George Abege, and Geoffrey Lemu, all converted their spot kicks in the penalty shootout, securing their team's victory.
Everton, who were visiting East Africa for the second time, had previously played against Gor Mahia in Tanzania in 2017 and had also played against Gor Mahia at Goodison Park in the UK in 2018.
