On December 22, 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta chaired the 18th extraordinary summit of the East African Community Heads of State Summit, a virtual meeting that brought together regional leaders to discuss key issues affecting the community.
The summit was attended by Presidents Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (Uganda), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), and Samia Suluhu Hassan (Tanzania), who expressed their gratitude to President Kenyatta for convening the virtual meeting and welcomed the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) expression of interest to join the EAC.
President Kenyatta emphasized the importance of the EAC integration process, stating that it provides a strong platform for regional socioeconomic transformation and is an effective vehicle for the economic development and prosperity of the people of East Africa.
The summit discussed several key issues, including the DRC's application to join the EAC, and directed the council of ministers to expedite a verification mission to the country and report back to the 22nd summit scheduled for next year.
