December 22, 2021, Tokyo, Japan - A global supply chain crunch, exacerbated by Covid-19 and floods in Canada, has led to a shortage of potatoes in Japan, forcing McDonald's to ration fries.

McDonald's Japan has taken the measure of selling only small-sized French fries for a week from Friday to avoid shortages.

The company cited 'large-scale flooding near the Port of Vancouver' and the 'global supply chain crunch caused by the coronavirus pandemic' as reasons for the shortage.

The restriction comes during the busy year-end period, with schools and offices beginning to close for the holidays.

It will also be in place on Christmas Day, a time when many in Japan traditionally enjoy a meal of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
