On December 21, 2021, Arsenal secured a spot in the League Cup semi-finals with a convincing 5-1 win over League One club Sunderland at the Emirates.
Eddie Nketiah, the 22-year-old striker, led the charge with a hat-trick, starting with a close-range finish after Rob Holding's header was parried out by Sunderland keeper Lee Burge.
Nicolas Pepe doubled the lead with a deflected shot, courtesy of good work from Cedric Soares, before Nathan Broadhead pulled a goal back for Sunderland with a nice finish.
Nketiah restored the two-goal advantage with a low ball from Nuno Tavares, and then produced a cheeky backheel finish after Pepe nutmegged Dener Hume and delivered a low cross.
The win was completed when 18-year-old substitute Charlie Patino, making his senior debut, converted another low cross from Pepe.
