On Monday night, a stone quarry in Oyuer village, Rachuonyo North, Homa Bay, caved in, claiming the lives of two people.
According to Kanyipir Location Chief, Israel Okoth Amadi, the quarry was being operated illegally without approval from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA).
Amadi also urged residents to explore alternative sources of livelihood, such as farming, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident occurred barely two weeks after a gold mine caved in in Abimbo Village, Siaya County, where several miners were rescued, but one, Tom Okwach, remains missing.
Search operations for Okwach have been ongoing for 20 days, with the rescue team facing delays in obtaining an excavator to aid the process.
The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the Kendu Bay Adventist Hospital mortuary as their families prepare for burial.
