December 21, 2021 - A Nairobi court has ordered the co-director of a popular city restaurant to remain in custody pending a ruling on her bail application. Nina Shanghavi presented herself in court three weeks after a warrant for her arrest was issued.
Shanghavi, who was on a wheelchair with an oxygen cylinder, denied the charges of fraudulently obtaining Sh520 million from a local bank. The prosecution opposed her release on bail, citing her breach of previous court orders.
The court heard that Shanghavi and her husband, Jayesh Umedlal, who is out on bail, had committed the offence between December 10, 2018, and November 2020. The duo is believed to be the owners of various restaurants, bars, and shopping malls in Nairobi.
According to court documents, the couple had entered into an agreement with a local bank and had been borrowing loans from 2015 to November 2020. They had provided properties as security, including those owned by their company and bank deposits from their alien accounts.
