On Tuesday, December 21, 2021, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) issued a traffic advisory, warning motorists to use alternative routes while approaching the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road.
The advisory was issued after a truck lost control and hit a ditch, blocking one lane of Kiambu Road.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the country had recorded the highest number of fatalities, with 4,121 by November 30, 2021, compared to 3,478 recorded over a similar period last year, an 18.5 per cent increase.
NTSA data also revealed that pedestrians were the most affected category of vulnerable road users, with 1,413 losing their lives compared to 1,231 last year.
The National Police Service (NPS) and NTSA have expressed concern over the rise in accidents and have initiated a crackdown on road users who fail to follow set rules and regulations.
They will be on the lookout for verification of Road Service License (RSL), motor vehicle inspection, driving license, and conductor badges, as well as compliance with route allocation and the use of short-term and night travel licenses.
Additionally, speed monitoring and random checks for drivers and passengers along major highways will be conducted.
