Kenyan football fans were left stunned when Kakamega Homeboyz captain Allan Wanga announced his retirement from international football on July 8, 2019, bringing an end to a 12-year career.
Wanga's decision comes after he was surprisingly left out of coach Sebastien Migne's African Cup of Nations squad, despite having a successful season with Kakamega-based side, scoring 18 league goals.
With 48 appearances and 12 goals for the Harambee Stars, Wanga made his debut in 2007 against Nigeria and went on to captain Kenya to the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in 2013.
Wanga released a statement confirming his retirement from Harambee Stars, stating that he wants to focus on his career as the County Sports Director with Kakamega county government and his club.
"It's now time for me to pave way for other players who I believe will embody the spirit of Harambee as I trust I did," Wanga said. "I wish the National Team the very best in their future endeavours and now transition from the pitch to the terrace as the team's biggest cheerleader."
Wanga concluded by thanking FKF and Kenya for the decade plus of togetherness.
