July 8, 2019 - Kisumu County is in the midst of a crisis as Governor Anyang' Nyong'o's decision to advertise the positions of senior staff has sent shockwaves through the county government.

The advertisement, which appeared in local dailies, aims to fill at least 21 positions for chief officers and 41 for directors, as well as the county secretary and deputy positions.

However, the move has triggered anxiety among officials currently holding the posts, with some even claiming that they are already jobless.

According to a senior county government official, some of the positions advertised already have substantive office holders, who have been serving in acting capacity for the past two years following court battles that barred Prof Nyong'o from filling the positions.

Interestingly, most of the holders of the positions were inherited from former Governor Jack Ranguma's regime and have been serving in acting capacity for the past two years.

Yesterday, County Secretary Olang'o Onudi, whose position has been advertised, said he will be seeking clarification from the public service board.

Meanwhile, some civil society activists are contemplating going to court to stop the recruitment, claiming that the advertisement was not supported by budgetary allocation.
