5 bodies retrieved as three still trapped in collapsed Murang’a hotel

Published on December 19, 2021, a devastating incident occurred in Murang’a County when the four-storey Sunstar Hotel in Gatanga collapsed, trapping several people under the rubble.

Rescue efforts are underway, with five bodies retrieved from the rubble so far. Unfortunately, three people remain trapped, and their fate is still uncertain.

According to Road and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia, who visited the scene on Sunday morning, the operations are expected to be concluded by the end of the day.

CS Macharia also announced that the adjacent building under construction has been condemned and will be demolished.

He further stated that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations has started the process of investigating the professionals involved in the construction of the hotel, both at the national and county levels.

Additionally, CS Macharia revealed that about four thousand buildings in the country have been marked as unsafe and urged the National Buildings Inspectorate to expedite their inspection.
