On Saturday, December 18, 2021, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha made it clear that he would not be following court orders to readmit students involved in arson incidents.
Speaking at Maseno school in Kisumu, Magoha criticized the court's directives, arguing that they put the lives of students at risk.
Magoha's stance came in the wake of student unrest in schools, with some institutions experiencing arson attacks.
Magoha emphasized that no single principal would be allowed to admit students with a history of indiscipline issues from their previous schools.
He also suggested that headteachers identify students who were threatening to burn schools and allow them to go home instead of closing the institutions.
Magoha further stated that the ministry and other stakeholders were considering introducing canning in schools to curb turmoil.
He assured that national examinations (KCSE and KCPE) would proceed as scheduled, with no changes to be made.
“The examinations are ready. Candidates should not panic. Let them be calm and prepare for the tests, which have taken into consideration challenges occasioned by disruptions to the academic calendar,” Magoha stated.
