On December 14, 2021, the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a weather advisory warning of impending heavy rainfall that could result in floods.
The affected counties include Embu, Meru, Murang'a, Nairobi, and Nyeri, as well as Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Isiolo, Garissa, Tana River, Taita Taveta, parts of Mombasa County, Kilifi, and Lamu.
According to the advisory, the rainfall is expected to increase in intensity to 30 millimeters in 24 hours on Tuesday, with the public being urged to be on the lookout for potential floods, even in areas where the rainfall has not been experienced, especially downstream of river valleys.
The Director of Meteorological Services, Stella Aura, signed the statement, which also warned the public to avoid walking or driving through moving water to avoid drowning or being swept away.
The advisory also warned of lightning incidents in areas prone to lightning and urged the public to avoid walking through open fields during storms or sheltering under trees.
Residents on the slopes of the Aberdare Ranges in Murang'a county and on the slopes of Mount Kenya have been asked to be on the lookout for possible landslides.
The weatherman also warned of moderately strong winds of up to 15 knots, which are strong enough to uproot trees and cause structural damages to buildings, and called on the public to be cautious.
