On July 8, 2019, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) announced its plans to conduct a paperless census from August 24 to 25, marking a significant milestone in the country's data collection methods.
The census, which will cost Sh18.5 billion, will be conducted electronically for the first time in Kenya's history. According to Director General Zachary Mwangi, the KNBS is confident about its data-capture program, which has been designed, developed, and tested.
As part of the census, Moi University and the Jomo Kenya University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) will assemble 64,700 data-capture devices at a cost of Sh15,000 each. The devices will be used to collect data on various aspects of Kenyan society, including agricultural activities, which were not captured in the 2009 census.
"In the previous census we did not collect information on agriculture, but this year we have a whole module on agriculture," Mwangi stated during a briefing at the Kenyatta International Convention Center in Nairobi.
