On July 8, 2019, leaders from Taita Taveta County were summoned to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road for questioning.
Governor Granton Samboja, Senator Jones Mwaruma, and several legislators from the county reported to the DCI headquarters, where they were questioned about the insecurity plaguing the county.
The conflict between camel herders and farmers over grazing land has resulted in a series of attacks, with herders losing their camels to hacking and some farmers being seriously injured.
One farmer was brutally killed by suspected herders, prompting residents to conduct a mass slaughter of 20 camels in retaliation on June 10.
Some herders have since moved to court, seeking to have the county government barred from evicting the camels from privately owned ranches.
