On December 17, 2021, a devastating incident occurred at Hillcrest Primary School in Devonport, Tasmania, Australia, where a bouncy castle was blown away by strong winds, resulting in the deaths of five children.

According to reports, the bouncy castle was part of the 'Big Day In' event organized by the school, which also included a Water Play Zone and Zorb balls. The incident occurred around 10 am when a significant local wind event caused the bouncy castle and several inflatable 'zorb' balls to lift into the air.

Emergency services, including helicopters, were dispatched to the school to treat the injured and transport some to hospital. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of recreational facilities, especially during the festive season.

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein expressed his deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those affected, stating, 'I'm certain that I speak for all Tasmanians in extending my deepest sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of everyone affected by today's tragedy.'

The incident has also highlighted the importance of safety precautions when using bouncy castles. In the UK, the government requires that bouncy castles should only be used when the wind speed is below 38km/h (24mph). Regular testing of bouncy castle equipment is also mandatory under UK health and safety law.
