Published on December 16, 2021, a trade dispute between Kenya and Uganda has been brewing over poultry products.

The issue began when Ugandan farmers claimed their chickens reproduced faster due to the country's better climate and generous government subsidies, making it cheaper to rear chickens and sell eggs to Kenya.

Uganda's favorable climate and government support have given their poultry industry a significant advantage over Kenya's. The country's subsidies have made it cheaper for Ugandan farmers to produce eggs, which are then sold to Kenya at a lower price.

Kenyan farmers, however, have found a way to compete by importing Ugandan feeds, which are cheaper than those found in Kenya. They also carry calcium-rich components to enrich the Ugandan feeds, making the business more complex.

The dispute highlights the challenges faced by Kenya's poultry industry, which is struggling to compete with Uganda's cheaper eggs. The issue has left both countries with a potential egg on their face, as they navigate the complex world of international trade.
