On July 5, 2019, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) issued a stern warning to individuals and organizations against publishing images of Kenyan currency without prior approval from the regulator.

The warning came after a Nairobi pastor shared photos of the recently unveiled Kenyan banknotes on social media to advertise a special church service celebrating the new currency.

According to Section 57 of the Central Bank of Kenya Act, any person wishing to use cash in any publication or for any purpose must apply in writing to the Bank for approval.

CBK will consider the application and either allow it or reject it. Failure to comply with this regulation can result in penalties, including a hefty fine or even imprisonment.

"Did you know? If you would like to use images of Kenyan currency for any purpose, you MUST apply in writing to the Central Bank of Kenya for approval. CBK will consider your application and either allow it or reject it. There are penalties for contravening this," the regulator noted in a tweet.
