On Sunday, the Dr. Geoffrey W. Griffins Memorial Sports Festival came to a close, with Starehe Boys Center emerging victorious in two disciplines: basketball and volleyball.
The event, now in its second edition, was held to commemorate the life of the school's pioneer, Dr. Griffins, and marked the school's 60th anniversary. A total of 20 schools participated in the two-day competition, which was first held in 2007.
Starehe Boys had initially aimed to dominate in all six disciplines: football, basketball, volleyball, hockey, handball, and badminton. However, their hopes of retaining the boys' football title were dashed when they lost to St. Teresa in the quarter finals, 3-2.
Despite this setback, Starehe rallied behind their alumnus, Colditz Blitz, who advanced to the finals after defeating Sunshine Boys 2-0 in the other semi-finals. However, Eastleigh High School ultimately emerged as the 2019 boys' football champions, defeating Colditz Blitz 4-2 in the finals.
Starehe Boys Center did, however, manage to triumph in basketball and volleyball. They defeated Alliance Boys 57-31 in the boys' basketball finals and dismissed M-Pesa Foundation Academy 3-2 in the volleyball finals.
Other notable winners included Mary Hill Girls, who won the girls' basketball title with a 10-5 victory over M-Pesa, and M-Pesa, who emerged as the girls' volleyball champions after defeating St. Teresa 3-1 in the finals.
