On July 6, 2019, a tragic incident occurred at Shamberere Technical Training College in Kakamega, leaving one student dead and another facing murder charges.
A post-mortem report revealed that the cause of death was a single stab wound to the chest, according to documents submitted in court by Kakamega Consultant pathologist Dixon Mchana.
The incident began when the deceased, Dennis Muhindi, 24, discovered a text message sent by the accused, Dennis Mango, to Purity Mbula, prompting a confrontation.
Police investigations revealed that Muhindi and Mango had a confrontation over the same girl they were both interested in, which escalated into a fight at the school's administration block.
During the altercation, Muhindi allegedly attempted to stab Mango, but the latter wrestled the knife out of his hands and stabbed him in the chest.
Police said that Muhindi fell to the ground and lost consciousness, prompting other students to attack Mango, who was later saved by officers from Kabras Police Station.
Muhindi was confirmed dead upon arrival at Malava sub-county Hospital, and the incident led to the indefinite closure of the institution.
Mango has been ordered to answer to murder charges at the High Court and is expected to take plea on July 9, 2019.
