On July 6, 2019, a tragic accident marred the Safari Rally, claiming one life and leaving three spectators injured.
The incident occurred in Soysambu when a vehicle rolled several times as the four spectators left the Soysambu Conservancy after completing the rally.
According to Gilgil base commander Robert Mugo, the vehicle rolled as the spectators followed a Safari Rally car.
First responders, including officials from the Kenya Red Cross Society, rushed to the scene and provided assistance.
Earlier that day, President Uhuru Kenyatta had flagged off the competition, presenting a cheque of Sh440 million to the World Rally Championship Safari Project's chief executive, Phineas Kimathi.
The President emphasized the importance of the Safari Rally in Kenyan culture, stating that it is held in high esteem and is a vital part of the national psyche.
The rally's organizers, fans, and delegates from the International Automobile Federation hoped that the event would help Kenya regain its position on the international rally calendar.
