Jalangó's Campaign Fundraising Sparks Outrage ¶
Radio host Jalangó has sparked controversy after asking for contributions via Mpesa to fund his 2022 campaign, with some Kenyans questioning the move given his six-figure salary.
Published on November 20, 2021, Jalangó took to social media to share a Till number that would help Kenyans fund his Langata Member of Parliament dreams in 2022, insisting that it's his next calling.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jalangó said, 'For the first time in my life, I've done something I've never done before. I've gotten myself a Till number. I have a Till number for you to support with whatever you can.'
However, the move wasn't welcomed by a section of his fans, who believe politicians shouldn't ask for money for their campaigns, especially when they already have a six-figure salary.
Some of his fans took to social media to express their disappointment, with Henry Nyamao saying, 'Shetani. Unataka uchangiwe za siasa?' (Devil. Do you want to change the rules of politics?)
Others, like Bethwel Korir, warned that the move would end in tears, saying, 'It will end in tears.'
It's worth noting that Jalangó had previously announced his plans to resign from Radio Africa on February 9, 2022, and had even set aside millions for his campaign, saying that campaigns have become about who has the deepest pockets.
He had also explained that the high cost of running a campaign was the reason many politicians become corrupt in order to recoup their money.
Despite the controversy, Jalangó remains committed to his campaign, and has even changed his name to Jalangó to avoid confusion during voting.
