On Saturday, Archbishop Phillip Anyolo was inaugurated as the head of the Nairobi Catholic Archdiocese in a ceremony presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan, Archbishop Bert Van Megen, on November 20, 2021.
Archbishop Anyolo, who previously served as the head of the Kisumu Archdiocese, takes over from Nairobi Auxiliary Bishop David Kamau who stepped in as an Apostolic Administrator following Cardinal John Njue's retirement in January.
Archbishop Anyolo has a rich background in the Catholic Church, having once headed the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), the top decision-making organ of the Kenyan church.
He was appointed the Archbishop of Kisumu on November 15, 2018, and installed on January 16, 2019.
Speaking during the installation ceremony, Archbishop Bert Van Megen praised Cardinal John Njue, saying he was an extraordinarily courageous man who loved the Church.
Cardinal Njue retired after attaining the age of 75, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire the church.
Archbishop Megen noted that Nairobi needs a good shepherd, one who is not focused on qualities or competences, but rather on listening to the silent whisper of the Good Shepherd.
