Published on November 19, 2021, the Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha) has announced reopening dates for the closed sections of Mombasa Road to ease the current traffic situation in Nairobi.
Since the construction of the Nairobi Expressway began, Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, and Waiyaki Way have become notorious for endless traffic jams during rush hours, causing frustration for many road users.
Despite the deployment of additional traffic police officers on these roads, overlapping and road accidents have become a common feature.
According to a public notice released by Kenha, the sections to be reopened are the Haile Selassie-University Way roundabout, which will open on December 15, 2021, and the Gateway Mall, which will open on December 20, 2021.
"Even as the civil works are ongoing, traffic management remains a critical component of project implementation. This is to ensure relative ease of movement and safety for all road users," the notice reads in part.
However, Kenha warned that some sections of the road may still experience traffic congestion, including those under intervention, such as the Gateway Mall, where excavation and protection of an oil pipeline crossing under the Expressway are ongoing.
The elevated section of the Nairobi Expressway is 91.4 per cent complete, with construction valued at Sh62 billion.
On completion, the road will stretch 27km across Nairobi and is meant to ease traffic flows in and out of the city centre.
