On November 18, 2021, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi announced that three terror convicts who had escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison in Nairobi were back in custody.

The convicts, Mohamed Ali Abikar, Joseph Juma Odhiambo, and Musharaf Abdalla Akhulunga, had escaped from the heavily-guarded facility on Monday, November 15, 2021, by digging a hole in the wall.

They were arrested in Kitui by a team of detectives who had been tracking them, and were flown back to Kamiti Prison where they were received by Matiangi and top security officials.

"The 3 escapees are back to Kamiti. I am grateful to Kenyans and the multi-agency team for the good work. Our security personnel are on high alert, let us all remain vigilant," Matiangi tweeted.

The recapture of the convicts came after a countrywide manhunt and changes at the management of the prisons. The escape had led to the sacking of top prisons boss Wycliffe Ogallo and the arrest of two senior prisons officials and seven warders.
