On November 19, 2021, French Ambassador to Kenya Aline Kuster-Menager visited the Kiwasco water treatment plant in Dunga, Kisumu, to assess the progress of projects funded by the French government.

During her tour, Kuster-Menager emphasized the importance of ensuring access to clean drinking water and sanitation services, particularly in the rapidly expanding city of Kisumu.

“We have seen the challenges you have been facing in the extraction, treatment, and distribution of water and that’s why the French government and the European Union partners are coming together to support your projects,” said Kuster-Menager.

According to Kiwasco management, the company has made significant strides in expanding its services, producing 81 million litres of water daily, exceeding the city's demand of 60 million litres.

The French government has provided substantial support to Kiwasco, with the company receiving over Sh9 billion (€70 million) in the last two years alone. The European Union, through the Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund, has also contributed Sh635 million (€5 million) in grants, while the Kenyan government has provided Sh1.27 billion.

Additionally, the European Investment Bank has provided a Sh4.45 billion (€35 million) loan to support Kiwasco's expansion efforts.
