On November 17, 2021, Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta signed into law the Law of Succession (Amendment) Bill, which aims to streamline succession matters.
The new law, sponsored by Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, limits the dependants entitled to inherit property to only the spouse and children of the deceased.
This move is expected to curb the practice of secret partners popping up after a person's death to demand recognition and a share of their property.
Previously, the law included a wide range of beneficiaries, including the deceased's parents, grandparents, grandchildren, stepchildren, and half-brothers and sisters.
President Kenyatta also signed into law the Refugees Bill and the Foreign Service Act, which aim to enhance Kenya's foreign relations and consolidate international legal instruments.
Separately, 21 people were arrested in connection with the Kampala twin suicide bombings, and telecom operators were authorized to restore limited internet services to residents who had been without access since October 25.
