Young athletes from the Athletics Camp Under White Mountain (ACUWM) made a remarkable showing in the cross-country competition held at Kimana Girls Secondary School on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.
Josephine Sampaiyo, a sixth-grader from Winners Academy in Kimana, took the top spot in the 5-kilometer race, completing the course in 17 minutes and 11 seconds. She was followed closely by her classmate, Maria Shali, who finished in 18 minutes and 20 seconds.
Philes Malemba and Agnes Mwashigadi, both students at Kimana Girls Secondary School, took third and fourth place, respectively, with times of 18 minutes and 56 seconds and 18 minutes and 59 seconds.
The young athletes, who joined the ACUWM camp this year, have been training under the guidance of coach Boniface Nduva, a seasoned marathon runner. Nduva expressed his pride in the team's performance and expressed confidence that they will continue to improve with time.
"I want the participants to gain experience and exposure. Our main goal is to ensure that our athletes compete from the grassroots level to national and international competitions," Nduva said.
