On November 16, 2021, three terror convicts escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison, sparking a massive manhunt. The escapees, Musharaf Abdalla alias Alex Shikanda (34), Joseph Juma Odhiambo (30), and Mohammed Ali Abikar (35), were cornered in the Tana River and Mwingi area after a tip-off by members of the public.
Interior CS Fred Matiang'i announced on November 18, 2021, that the escapees will face fresh charges alongside nine prison officers suspected of aiding their escape. Matiang'i emphasized the need for Kenyans to remain vigilant, citing the ongoing terror-related threats.
As part of the heightened security measures, screening systems have been upgraded at airports and Standard Gauge Railway termini. Matiang'i reassured citizens that the government is on high alert, urging them to exercise caution and be prepared for potential inconveniences.
"We are not out of the woods yet, let us be careful and watchful and you may be inconvenienced but we are not in the normal space at the moment, we have raised the level of alert," Matiang'i noted.
