Three terror convicts who escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison earlier this week were recaptured on Thursday in Mwingi, Kitui County, after a tip-off from members of the public.
The trio, Mohammed Ali Abikar, Musharaf Abdalla, and Joseph Juma Odhiambo, were apprehended following a tip-off from locals who suspected them of planning to flee to Somalia.
According to authorities, the three would trek during the night and hide after sunrise, but their plan was foiled by the locals who reported their suspicious behavior to the authorities.
After their recapture, a chopper from Nairobi was dispatched to pick them from Kitui, and they were returned to Kamiti Prison, where they were received by top government officials, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and his ICT colleague Joe Mucheru.
Interestingly, the fugitives enjoyed a chopper ride for the first time in their lives, and they were warmly received by the officials.
When asked if the Ksh60 million bounty would be given to the person who helped the police arrest them, Matiang'i sounded non-committal, saying, 'No! No! No! We are not going there at the moment. Let’s not be speculative about this. We are going to work meticulously as my colleagues have said.'
