On November 18, 2021, three fugitive terror suspects, Musharraf Abdalla Akhulunga, Mohammed Ali Abikar, and Joseph Juma Odhiambo, were recaptured in Kitui County after a dramatic escape from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.
According to reports, the suspects were arrested on Thursday in Mwingi, Kitui County, after residents reported seeing them in Malalani market in Endau location, where they bought milk, bottled water, and biscuits.
Residents became suspicious when the fugitives asked for directions connecting to Garissa and Boni Forest in Lamu, and one of the escapees had swollen legs and was limping.
Kitui County Police Commander Leah Kithei confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspects were cornered by security agents in Mwingemi area as they tried to find their way to the Mwingi-Garissa highway.
However, Kenyans on social media have raised doubts about the authenticity of the escape, with many casting theories that it was an inside job and that the suspects would not have escaped the highly guarded prison without being noticed.
