On November 18, 2021, a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train heading to Mombasa from Nairobi encountered a mechanical issue at the Lesonkoyo Station, causing undue delay and inconvenience to passengers.

According to a statement released by Kenya Railways, a rescue locomotive was dispatched to enable passengers to complete their journey following the unexpected interruption.

Passengers were expected to arrive in Mombasa at 4:20 pm, and Kenya Railways apologized for the inconvenience caused, asking passengers to be patient.

The delay was expected to affect the afternoon passenger train from Mombasa as well as the 10 pm train.

Kenya Railways has experienced several instances of trains developing mechanical problems since the beginning of 2021, including a Nairobi-bound train from Nanyuki that burst into flames due to an electrical fault in its engine.
