Chief Justice Martha Koome to Chair JSC Meeting on Sonko's Allegations ¶
Thursday, November 18, 2021
Chief Justice Martha Koome has announced that the Judiciary Service Commission (JSC) will meet to discuss allegations of corruption made by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko against High Court judge Said Chitembwe.
According to Koome, the JSC has taken notice of the allegations and will deliberate on the matter according to its constitution and statutory procedures.
"The Judicial Service Commission will meet to deliberate on the issue according to its constitution and statutory set procedures," Koome said in a statement.
The allegations against Chitembwe were made public after Sonko released a series of tapes accusing the judge of corruption. Chitembwe has denied the allegations, stating that the money found in his possession was for his son's school fees in Australia.
Chitembwe had admitted to having Sh770,000 in US currency with him when police officers raided his office in July. However, he claimed that the money was for school fees for his son, who studies at a university in Australia.
"That the USD7,000 in my possession was and still is my lawful money intended for my son’s school fees in Australia. I voluntarily handed over the same to the officers when I saw them do a body search on the 1st interested party (Justice Aggrey Muchelule) to avoid any misrepresentation by the said officers," Chitembwe said in an affidavit.
