On November 18, 2021, High Court Judge Anthony Mrima handed down a four-month prison sentence to DCI boss George Kinoti for contempt of court.

The sentence was issued in response to Kinoti's failure to comply with a 2019 court order to return firearms and ammunition taken from businessman Jimi Wanjigi's residence in 2017.

Justice Mrima had directed the DCI, Inspector General of Police, and the DPP to return the seized firearms, including a pistol, a Glock pistol, and an assault rifle, which Wanjigi claimed were taken without a valid reason.

Wanjigi had obtained a court order in 2019, which ruled that the government acted unreasonably in taking away his firearms, as he had a valid license.

However, Kinoti argued that he had appealed the High Court's decision and the matter was pending at the Court of Appeal. He also claimed that some of the firearms held by Wanjigi were high-precision military firearms not authorized to be held by civilians in Kenya under the Firearms Act.
