On November 18, 2021, a Kenyan court handed down a significant ruling in a long-standing case involving the Director of the DCI, George Kinoti.

High Court Judge Anthony Mrima sentenced Kinoti to 4 months in prison for failing to comply with a court order to return firearms seized from politician Jimi Wanjigi's residence in 2017.

The court had directed Kinoti and the Inspector General of Police to return all seized firearms and ammunition in January 2019, but Kinoti failed to attend court on September 27, 2021, instead filing an affidavit.

Wanjigi subsequently filed contempt of court proceedings against Kinoti, seeking his commitment to civil jail.

Now, Kinoti has been ordered to surrender to prison within 7 days, with the option for the Inspector General to issue a warrant of arrest if he fails to comply.

Notably, Judge Mrima stated that the warrant would remain valid even after Kinoti leaves office, ensuring that the Inspector General can execute it at any time.

"In the further event the IG of Police fails to execute the warrant, the same shall remain valid and be executed anytime including when Kinoti leaves the office of the DCI," Judge Mrima ruled.
