On Wednesday, November 17, 2021, Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu nominated Paul Mutunga Mutungi as her deputy, filling the position left vacant after her swearing-in as Nairobi's third Governor on Tuesday, November 16.
Mutungi, the current Nairobi County Chief of Staff, previously ran for the Embakasi South parliamentary seat in 2017 but lost to ODM's Julius Mawathe.
In a letter to Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura, Kananu explained her reasons for choosing Mutungi, stating that she considered leadership qualities, professional qualifications, and gender balance.
"In considering this nomination, I have taken into account his professional qualifications, leadership qualities, gender balance and competencies necessary for the Deputy Governor's seat," she wrote.
She has requested Speaker Mutura to facilitate the immediate launch of the vetting process to ensure a smooth transition.
Earlier, Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju confirmed that a decision had been made on who would deputise Kananu after wide consultations within the handshake team.
