On November 17, 2021, Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa made a significant announcement to the National Assembly Defence Committee, stating that British soldiers involved in the murder of Agnes Wanjiru in Nanyuki in 2012 would be extradited to Kenya to face murder charges.
Wamalwa emphasized that the government considers this issue a top priority and has agreed with the British Government to conduct a joint investigation to bring the culprits to justice.
He assured the committee that once the prosecution is made, the UK government would ensure extradition happens, bringing closure to the case.
The case dates back to March 31, 2012, when Wanjiru was last seen walking out of a Nanyuki bar accompanied by two British soldiers. Her body was retrieved nearly three months later from a hotel's septic tank in Nanyuki town.
Following an outcry after the shocking revelations, the Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to reopen the case at the beginning of this month.
