On November 17, 2021, Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu Mwenda was sworn in as the city's third Governor, following the impeachment of Mike Sonko over graft allegations in December the previous year.
Just a day after her inauguration, Governor Kananu nominated Paul Mutunga Mutungi, a former councillor and current Nairobi County chief of staff, as her deputy.
The nomination ceremony took place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre Comesa Grounds, presided over by Judge Lillian Mutende.
