On November 17, 2021, Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu was sworn into office at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC), marking a new chapter in the city's leadership.
Just a day after her inauguration, Governor Kananu nominated Paul Mutunga Mutungi, the current Chief of Staff at City Hall, as her deputy. In a statement, she expressed her wish to be deputized by Mutungi, citing his experience and skills.
Mutungi's appointment as Chief of Staff was made by former acting Nairobi Governor and current Speaker Benson Mutura in January 2021, replacing Brian Kamau Mugo.
The nomination will be put to a vote before the Nairobi County Assembly, where MCAs will decide whether to approve or reject it.
If successful, Mutungi will become the fourth Nairobi Deputy Governor, following in the footsteps of Jonathan Mueke (2013-2017), Polycarp Igathe (August 2017- January 2018), and Governor Kananu herself, who assumed office in January 2021.
Governor Kananu's appointment was a result of the impeachment of her predecessor, Mike Sonko, in December 2020. She had previously served as the city's acting governor following a lawsuit by Sonko that barred her from officially taking over the office.
