Three Inmates Escape from Kamiti Prison ¶
On November 17, 2021, three inmates escaped from Kamiti Prison in Kiambu County, sparking an investigation into how they managed to break free.
According to a report by Taifa Leo, the three inmates, Musharaf Abdalla Akhulunga, Mohamed Ali Abikar, and Joseph Juma Odhiambo, were being held in a cell in Jengo A6, a section of the prison known for its strict security measures.
However, an investigation by Taifa Leo found that the cell where the three inmates were being held was not secure, and it was possible for them to escape without the help of prison officials.
The three inmates were said to have escaped through the main gate of the prison, which is heavily guarded by prison officials and equipped with CCTV cameras.
Following the escape, the government announced that seven prison officials had been arrested for allegedly helping the inmates escape.
Waziri wa Usalama Fred Matiang'i said that the investigation had found that the information provided about the escape was misleading, and that the prison officials had not been involved in the escape.
He also announced that the prison officials who were on duty at the time of the escape had been suspended and would be re-examined.
Waziri Matiang'i also announced that the government would take measures to prevent similar escapes in the future, including increasing the security measures at the prison and improving the training of prison officials.
