US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee met with Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council leader Lt-Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Khartoum on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, in a bid to restore Sudan's democratic transition.
During the meeting, Burhan said his new transitional government would welcome ousted Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, should he change his mind to join it.
However, the Liaison Committee of the Central Council for Freedom and Change, which represents civil society groups that had been part of a power-sharing arrangement under Hamdok, rejected and condemned the coup and subsequent measures, including the formation of a new Sovereign Council and the arrest of Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok and some members of his government.
Ms Phee said Washington was calling for the return to constitutional order as well as the return of the Prime Minister to his job to implement his duties in accordance with the constitutional declaration.
Despite the promises made by Burhan, including the release of detained former members of the transitional cabinet and Prime Minister Hamdok from house arrest, Ms Phee concluded her trip without a tangible way forward on the implementation of these actions.
