On November 17, 2021, ousted Football Kenya Federation (FKF) boss Nick Mwendwa arrived at the Milimani courts, where his freedom was at stake. The Director of Criminal Investigation had applied to detain him for 14 days to allow for the conclusion of investigations into the suspected fraudulent acquisition of public property.

Prosecution counsel Everline Onunga had requested the court to detain Mwendwa, citing the need to investigate his alleged transfer of Sh8.5 million from the FKF account to his personal accounts and the fictitious withdrawal of Sh29.5 million from the federation's account.

Just a day prior, Mwendwa had been released on bail pending the determination of the application to detain him for two weeks. However, the court's decision was now being challenged by the prosecution.

Senior principal magistrate Wandia Nyamu had granted Mwendwa a cash bail of Sh4 million or the alternative of Sh7 million bond with two sureties of the same amount, with conditions that he did not access his former office, contact FKF employees, or attend any football match.

Mwendwa's fall from grace began on Thursday last week when Sports CS Amina Mohamed disbanded FKF and appointed a caretaker committee headed by retired Judge Aaron Ringera to lead the federation for six months. He was arrested on Friday and spent the weekend in custody before being brought to court.
