US Secretary of State to Visit Kenya, Nigeria, and Senegal

Published on November 12, 2021, US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will embark on a six-day visit to Kenya, Nigeria, and Senegal from November 15-20, 2021.

The visit underscores the depth and breadth of US relationships with African partners, with a focus on advancing US-Africa collaboration on shared global priorities, including ending the COVID-19 pandemic, building back to a more inclusive global economy, combating the climate crisis, revitalizing democracies, and advancing peace and security.

Secretary Blinken will begin his trip in Nairobi, where he will meet with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs Ambassador Raychelle Omamo to affirm the strategic partnership between the US and Kenya.

During his visit, the Secretary will discuss regional security issues, including Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan, with the Kenyan government, as both countries are members of the UN Security Council.

He will also advance US-Kenyan cooperation on ending COVID-19, improving clean energy access, and protecting the environment, while underscoring US support for a peaceful and inclusive Kenyan election in 2022.

From Nairobi, Secretary Blinken will travel to Abuja, where he will meet with President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama to discuss furthering cooperation on global health security, expanding energy access and economic growth, and revitalizing democracy.

He will also deliver a speech on US-Africa policy in Abuja, engage with Nigerian entrepreneurs in the digital sector, and reaffirm the close partnership between the US and Nigeria.

Concluding his trip in Dakar, Secretary Blinken will meet with President Macky Sall and Foreign Minister Aïssata Tall Sall to reaffirm the close partnership between the US and Senegal, discuss regional issues and shared values, and engage in events that highlight America's strong commercial relationship with Senegal.
