On July 6, 2019, a new milk firm, WhiteGold, was launched in Kenya, marking a significant investment in the camel milk industry.
Mr. Warsame, the CEO of WhiteGold, has been living outside the country for a long time but has returned to Kenya to turn around the lives of herders and ranchers who supplied camel milk to Vital, a leading company in East, central and Southern Africa.
Mr. Warsame has poured his Sh. 20 million savings into the camel milk business, which he believes should break even before mid-2018.
The company processes approximately 500 litres of milk daily, but targets more than 3,000 litres from next year.
WhiteGold has branded 500ml bottles of the product that retail for Sh. 125.
The company's pasteurisation process involves heating the milk to 80 degrees for 40 minutes, cooling it for an hour, and packaging it manually.
Mr. Warsame is banking on the health benefits of camel milk and the vagaries of climate change to predict a thriving future for the venture.
Research has found that camel milk has medicinal and nutritious properties due to its unique composition.
