Kitui Governor Ngilu Promises to Pay Doctors' Four-Month Arrears

Published on November 11, 2021, by Taifa Leo

Kitui Governor Ngilu has assured the High Court that she will pay doctors in the county their four-month arrears. The doctors had been on strike since July 2021, demanding payment of their salaries.

Ngilu made the promise on November 10, 2021, when she appeared before High Court Judge Monicah Mbaru. She asked the court to give her 30 days to pay the doctors their salaries.

Ngilu also assured the court that she would pay the doctors within 30 days, as ordered by the court. She also informed the court that she had recalled more than 40 doctors who had resigned from their positions in the county to work elsewhere.

Ngilu asked the court to allow her to work with the county's officials to resolve the issues raised by the doctors. She also asked the court to adjourn the case to December 10, 2021, to give her time to resolve the issues.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) had accused Ngilu and the Kitui County government of failing to pay the doctors their salaries in breach of the law.
