On November 10, 2021, a car explosion in the coastal city of Aden killed a pregnant Yemeni journalist, Rasha Abdullah al-Harazi, and seriously injured her husband, Mahmoud Ameen al-Atmy, a reporter.

The explosion occurred while the couple was driving near the Abyan seashore, with an explosive device attached to the car, according to the Yemen News Agency.

Al-Atmy survived the blast but was left seriously injured, according to the Yemen Journalist Syndicate (YJS).

“The Syndicate considers this crime a reprehensible precedent, and expresses fear that it serves as a dangerous indicator of a new and violent phase targeting journalists in Yemen,” the YJS said.

The EU condemned the attack, stating that perpetrators must be brought to justice and that rights violations against journalists affect freedom of expression.

Video footage showed the aftermath of the explosion, with several onlookers inspecting the charred husk of the vehicle on the side of the road.

Aden serves as a temporary seat for the Saudi-backed government, which has continued fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels across the war-torn country.
