Published on November 9, 2021, the ArtX fair in Lagos, Nigeria, brought together art collectors from across the globe to experience the country's thriving art scene.

Among the 30 art galleries from across the African continent, as well as Paris, London, and Barcelona, was Septieme, a Paris-based gallery, which showcased the work of Kenyan artist Kaloki Nyamai.

Two gigantic blue paintings by Nyamai, each measuring 2 meters square, were sold separately for $20,000 (17,300 euros), highlighting the potential of Nigeria's art market.

Lea Perier Loko, a representative from Septieme, noted that Nigeria's art collectors are not well-known globally, but when they arrive, they are eager to spend.

Delphine Lopez from Cecile Fakhoury, one of the continent's best-known galleries, also showcased the work of Ivorian and Beninese artists, highlighting the diversity of the African art scene.

ArtX founder Tokini Peterside launched the project in 2016 to open up collectors in Nigeria to other markets and bring international galleries to the country.

Peterside's vision was to showcase the dynamic and passionate people of Lagos, often overshadowed by negative portrayals of the city and its insurgency.
