On November 7, 2021, the 50th New York City Marathon took place, with Kenyan athletes Peres Jepchirchir and Albert Korir emerging victorious in the women's and men's races, respectively.
Peres Jepchirchir, the Olympic champion, won the women's race in 2:22:39, narrowly edging out her fellow Kenyan Viola Cheptoo and Ethiopian Ababel Yeshaneh in a thrilling three-way battle.
Albert Korir, who had previously finished second in 2019, dominated the men's race, establishing a 17-second lead through the 35-kilometre mark and crossing the finish line in Central Park in 2:08:22.
The temperature on Staten Island hovered around 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.44°C) as the marathon major kicked off at 8 a.m. ET, after a year-long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Swiss athlete Marcel Hug won the men's wheelchair division in 1:31:24, while Australian Paralympic champion Madison de Rozario took home the women's wheelchair title in 1:51:01.
