Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has commended Mount Kenya University (MKU) for its modern Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre, which he says is a significant milestone in the institution's development.
On Thursday, Matiang'i visited the university where he toured the newly opened Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre, describing it as a world-class facility.
He noted that the centre is crucial because it hosts high-profile national and international events, and that MKU has taken a significant step by investing in such a facility.
"This centre is important because it can be used for various functions, including conferences and other events. Therefore, it's a big step taken by MKU," Matiang'i said.
He also commended MKU for hosting a major peace conference on election-related issues, and for training over 30 law students.
The university has also partnered with Thika Level 5 Hospital and is constructing a mortuary that can accommodate 1,000 bodies, up from the initial 40.
So far, 40,000 students have enrolled at the university, with over 10,000 graduating annually with various degrees.
Prof Simon Gicharu, the founder of MKU, said the Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre is crucial for inclusivity, bringing together people from all over the world.
He praised the former President Mwai Kibaki for elevating the status of the university and awarding it a special charter.
"Many students who have passed through MKU have gained international recognition and have made a positive impact in their respective fields," Gicharu said.
